Health Insurance: Texas Has Highest Uninsured Rate

U.S. census data released on October 13th shows that Texans are more likely to have no health insurance than residents of any other state in 2009.  Survey results show that 1.2 million children and 26.3% of people under age 65 lack insurance.

Texas has eight of the ten counties in the U.S. with the highest percentage of uninsured people.  Hudspeth County in West Texas at the Mexican border leads with 42.8% of residents having no coverage.  About 80% of the 3,476 residents are Hispanic, and 30% live beneath the poverty level.
